You have to keep exchanging other resources until you get a slot that requires a market token! Don't collect that extra token because it'll just disappear. Let it float until you have spent one. It won't go away.

Also, it does make a difference with the marketplace events how advanced your profession workplace is. If it's at 100%, it definitely goes faster than if it's only at 50%, because it takes the number of resources and gives a bonus based on workplace completion. It seems to last quite a while. I stopped playing about 2-3 years ago (can't remember exactly) then came back a few days back and it was all still there.
