Did it turn into a sim-eating plant?
This is normal; it does that sometimes. Either plant something that won't do this (like beans or onions) or else plant a lot of them; that way, the odds are that at least some of them will turn out right.

Some items are on sale for 12 days. Check out the build mode; chairs, windows that kind of thing. Nothing particularly stands out for me, but there might be something you want.
