The only way is to back up the room adjacent and bring the balcony over the downstairs room. Support posts are decorative only.

You understood correctly. :)

The balconies only go 3 spaces out from a room but you can get around that by build small temporary rooms to extend the balcony boundary. It's hard for me to explain. But there is a great video on youtube by Lyla L that explains it better. The video is about making balcony bridges specifically but it explains how you can make balconies larger, too.

Exactly! :). If you go from one building and from another you can cover 6 spaces and make walkways and get creative. Save before you do much though. It's pricey and can also be rather tortuous! in a good way?

Check out my Zen Retreat on the island if you want to see some crazy balcony stuff. GC kls1st. There's a picture of it somewhere in here too.

I took some photos to show how you can get around the 3 square limit.

1. This is the standard 3 square limit:
3 square limit
3 square limit
2. You can extend the limit by building another room:
Extending the limit
Extending the limit
3. Extending the limit:

Extending the limit
4. You can then build a patio that is longer than 3 squares. Build that patio so that it doesn't touch any temporary buildings:
Patio longer than 3 squares
Patio longer than 3 squares
5. If you want the patio to be longer you can move a room 2 squares at a time and then keep adding to the patio:
Moving the room, adding to the patio
Moving the room, adding to the patio
You can see as you move the room the yellow boundary line goes back to the standard 3 squares where it is not next to a room.

6. By doing that you can make a large patio:
Large patio
Large patio
7. As long as you don't have the patio touch the temporary rooms you can delete them and still have the large patio.

You don't need two temporary rooms, you can do it with only one:

You are left with a patio that is extended beyond the 3 square limit:

With lots of little rooms you can make a really long balcony:

I did this to make walkways in one of my houses:
