Re: [LIVE EVENT] Luxury Laundry Live Event

Post by Bongi »

After the last two events, (neither of which I was able to complete), I had pretty much decided that the joy of these re-tuned game events was gone -- instead of being excited about the prospect of new items, I found myself thinking, "ugh, another new event to fail..."

I am happy to report that I was able to complete this one with an hour to spare, (but only because I woke up earlier than my alarm this morning.) I went to sleep last night resigned and disappointed in yet another "almost completed" event.

I think the sub-topic of gambling is interesting (in the context of this game) because after experiencing the disappointment of failing to complete the last two, I sat back and analyzed my own behaviors/emotions when spinning for sp's and cc's. I never thought of myself as a gambler, (don't go to casinos, am generally not a "risk-taker", etc...), but I definitely experienced emotional highs/lows as a result of those spins.

Enough so, that I don't recommend this game to friends anymore. Before, it was about building a town, decorating houses and generally being creative. Now, it seems like we MUST engage in gambling behaviors in order to earn unique items.

These events are no longer about persisting through until all is unlocked, they seem to be about either paying money to gain extra resources (or to get more spins) or hoping that our spins are lucky enough to generate those resources. There is no skill in spinning plants, only having enough currency to pull the knob, and then hoping that there's enough luck to have the wheels stop in a favorable spot... that is gambling.

I get that the game creators need to earn a living, which is why I allow myself to make micro-purchases if certain items appeal to me. However, I'm cautious now to not make those purchases if the reward is currency to throw into the slot machines, (aka spinner plants).

I still love tinkering about my town, changing houses and generally being God to my kingdom, but am sad that EA has turned this game into a casino-type experience in order to obtain new & interesting content.

That all being said, I do like this new content. It's a refreshing change from re-vamped furniture and actually allows enhanced decorating/town building prospects. It's also lovely that thay gave us more rewards per tier -- I enjoyed getting more than I expected as each goal was unlocked.

I was pleasantly surprised that I was able to finish though. Hopefully it means that EA might be finding a mid-line in tuning the resources vs time required to reasonably complete an event. I am more likely to spend money in a game that I'm enjoying than one that leaves me disappointed and discouraged.

I unfortunately did not finish this one similar to the ladt one because they are so time consuming that it is impossible in my schedule. I had finals, continuous testing, and huge projects for the last month, and it has been crazy. I am graduating in a couple days, so more the stress. I really wish they would dial it down with this events because they are getting annoying

I did manage to finish the event too but I was up against it and real life was kind to me time wise this time.

For those who didn't finish due to real life, take heart in what you were doing or achieving that meant you didn't have the time to complete. Be it graduating (woo hoo that's a huge achievement!) looking after your health, or just living real life with family. All greater things than finishing an annoying task in a narky game. I love this game but maybe it is more like real life than we think and we can't have it all :?

Well done Diananadine on graduating :D

BTW I just love the way the washers and driers rock when they are being used. I have one like this in real life that needs replacing very soon

What's wrong with gambling?
But it can be life ruining, and is a fairly big problem here at least.
Wow, I read that and immediately thought - oh hello, a fellow Aussie. Isn't it scary that I could tell where you were from, just from that one line!! Hi from Adelaide :D
Another Aussie here as well, but I'm living in England. Loved hearing the clothes line called a Hills Hoist, and remembered swinging on a spinning one as a kid 😉 Family still living in Sydney, Canberra, Goulburn and Glenelg. Also felt more at home hearing it called pokies and not fruit machines!!! And made the song 'blow up the pokies' run around in my head now, lol
Yeah, you guys get me. :D
Aww, the Whitlams! I was irrationally annoyed at my English husband recently when singing along to the radio in the car, and he looked at me funny and asked what this obscure song was.
The Aussies have really hijacked this thread now!

This exactly. I didn't mean to come off pearl-clutching, but regardless of the ethics of forcing gambling into a general audience game, it's pretty lousy gameplay. It should be possible to get results through tactic, skill and time management, not just by hoping luck/FM's randomness algorithm is on your side.
There's some tactical skill and sense of community in forms of gambling like cards or sports betting, but pokies/slots/fruit machines (a term I hadn't heard of before!) are brainless, addictive and insidious. I don't think they belong in this game.

My hubby is also English, but a proper music snob, because he's a violinist. However I have managed to get him into Tommy Emmanuel, and managed to meet him this year in Basingstoke. To the Whitlams he just said, 'Yeah, that's okay,' but didn't ask to listen to more, lol, but he's like that with loads of music.

Lol, yeah we have done a little hijacking, next time it will be some else and we'll look at their comments blankly!

So the firemonkeys cheapened out on us again, and gave us defective appliances. Figures 😠😆

Weren't we suppose to get bunk beds with this update? I finished with about 12 hours left, but I used quite a few SP's to cut the time in half when it got close to bed time. I used about 250 SP's or 300.

Bongi, I do gamble on horses at least 3 days a week online, and I do much better at that, then spinning for CC's. I would notice the ladybug in place, but it would then move. FM & EA are so bad! :?

I got the things I really wanted: the tile sets, the white washer, the white dryer, and the shelves. Then I kept going to unlock the other items because I would like to have the silver washer & dryer. I got everything except the ironing board. It would take 130 SP to purchase it.

The good news is that when this event comes 'round again I'll finish it quickly. ;)

I do think they are getting better with the balance between the resources required vs. the time given but it still needs work. The resource requirements for this event but with a 7 day time limit would be more manageable. I don't think these Live Events should have less than 7 days, especially when 7+ days is the norm for hobby events.

The CCs and the spin plants need to be revamped. We should at least be able to get one spin out of one 2.5 hour action - more would be nice but at least one. It's ridiculous that one sim doing one round of collecting doesn't make enough candles for one spin. And they need to get rid of the 1,2, and 3 CCs. They can up the CC goal for the daily goals, then, if they want to but the way it is now is just unfair.

When the social point flower was first added to the game the comparisons to gambling began and I didn't agree because at worst we got an even exchange of SPs for LPs. But then they changed it to 20LPs with the lowest SP amount 3... FM can say all they want about having increased the jackpot to 500 from 450 but that doesn't distract from the fact that they quadrupled the cost and greatly diminished the lowest SP return.

For the live events, the pure luck involved with getting the CCs required is really frustrating. You can plan all you want, set all the alarms you want, collect all the bonuses, be on the game constantly to restart your sim and in the end it doesn't matter because you can spin and spin and spin and not get the CCs you need.

That being said, I would like for them to continue with the Live events because it seems the only way we are going to be getting sets of new items and I desperately want to keep getting new items. I'd love new things for preteens and seniors now.

I was building a laundry room for one of my houses and when I was done I thought, "this looks too clean, it's not messy enough!" I know we've got that pile of clothes in the preteen section but it would be nice to have that laundry basket the sims pull out of their magical pockets. That's the bad thing about these live events - I don't really expect expansions of these items to ever come again in-game as events or just added items. But packs in the online store, oh definitely. And now I have to admit I've started to include possible online packs in my budget. Doh!
