Answers to some of the big questions:

Resources for the Town Sign will appear as random drops, but very, very rarely.

Only one teen can bee an Idol, and therefore your Teen Idol can use all the different instruments.

One type of instrument produces one type of notes.
After the first collection you have to
write 3 notes (30 min. each) on the keyboard after wich you recieve 1.000 XP
write 3 notes (1 hour each) on the bass guitar after wich you recieve 1.500 XP
write 3 notes (1½ hour each) on the drum kit after wich you recieve a TV Show Cameo ressource
write 3 notes (2 hour each) on the Electric guitar after wich you recieve a Radio Interview ressource
write 3 notes (3 hours each) by singing in the microphone after wich you recieve a Magazine Photoshoot ressource

You recieve 3 LP for a full collection.

For the full upgraded sign there is a possible bonus to the town revenue of §600.

Being very impatient, I've used a lot of LP's to level up.

Same here. And I created a fourth teen too to make up that band
They should at least let all teens play the instruments even if only one can take it up as a hobby.
I can see the reasoning behind it though as if all your teens could take up music as a hobby you could definitely get the resources faster than just one lone teen collecting the notes. Another underhanded tactic to get us to spend LPs

This is very disappointing.
So many high hopes for this event. And I had just made another preteen (Thomas) into a teen today too. At least now Monica has someone to make trouble with, I mean hang out with. But now I will have to decide which one is worthy of the teen idol tasks. A little competition would have been nice. I have three sims planned who would make great judges, and even have a place I to turn into an auditorium. After the contest, it would become a concert hall. But who wants to hear a song played one instrument at a time? That's just weird.
Then there's the cost and resource issues. And how much time will this take away from normal homework, hobbies, and other activities? But still... a new mansion... I'm so torn!

Thank you for the info on the goals and the new house. Is there a time limit to finish the goals to get the free house?

Thanks for all the info. Good to see that the mansion is free.

Did some quick calculations and completing 1 music collection would take 24 hours.
So if you need to complete it 31 times to get all the resources to unlock the mansion, that would mean you would have to play 1 month non-stop and you would have it.
But if the resources are also random drops you might get it earlier. Although Microdot mentions that they drop very rarely so it is nice to have another way of getting them.

Glad I haven't made any teens yet. I was thinking of a boyband but alas my town will have to do without one.
