So...I bought myself a brand new laptop on Monday...which is probably already out if date. Though I didn't buy it specifically for it, I had Sims 4 very much in mind when I did because it just looks so freaking awesome and Freeplay has me totally hooked on the little guys.
But...since it won't be seeing the light of day for another year now...I'm assuming the 'fall 2014 release' means the American autumn and not ours...I'm thinking of getting one of the older versions to tide me over until then. The question is, which one? Sims 3 seems the obvious choice, being the newest, but it seems to come with a plethora of add ons and expansion packs.
So what do my fellow simmers experienced in all things not Freeplay recommend?

all of the PC Sims games come with a plethora of add ons and expansion packs. Get Sims 3. If you like Sims Free Play you will really enjoy the PC version I think.

Re: A question for PC Simmers...
I have all the versions and all of the expansion and stuff packs. Yeah, I know... I have a simaddiction? Sims and Sims2 have been sunsetted and you can no longer get support, so I would go with Sims3. Stores like Target frequently have them on sale and some of them are combo packs that include Sims3 plus either an expansion or stuff pack. There are some free downloadable towns, too, so don't buy any extra town packs until you can see what you might be able to get for free. I know Riverview is free, Hidden Springs might be. I just picked up a couple of expansions for 50% off at Target last month. If you are in the US, sometimes you can get used ones at places like Gamespot.
If you go to http://www.thesims3.com you can check out all the different packs before you go shopping. Wikipedia also has a good summary of each pack that tells a little about what's included or what your Sims can do if you get that pack. There is a huge online community where you can upload your houses for other people to try and download houses you like that other people design. I have been known to spend my lunch break watching Sims on You Tube, because people post their stories. The Sims in Sims3 are more autonomous - they'll do things on their own, but they don't operate in real time like SFP, so you have to check in on them to make sure they haven't starved to death. Don't build them a pool with no ladder, they will drown, because they can't get out!
First time I played Sims, I stayed up all night and didn't even realize it! When Sims2 came out, I went and got a new computer so I could play it - my old computer would handle Sims, but it didn't have enough memory or graphics cards and adapters for Sims2. Like I said, Simaddicted!

I think, therefore, I Sim! (Or I did before they told me to "harvest" them)

Re: A question for PC Simmers...
Thanks, guys.
I'm in the land of the Firemonkeys...and I did do a bit of research online last night. Best place here to get them looks to be JB Hi-Fi. The base game itself is $10 cheaper there than anywhere else, and they too often have Sims Sales...I've been tempted in the past but decided against stressing out my old XP desktop with them.
I probably won't get all the expansion packs right off the bat...they're $30 to $50 a pop here, and there's an awful lot of them. I'll probably go with the newer ones...the island one...maybe the future one...the dragon one, 'cos it has dragons. Though...the older ones are a lot cheaper...the night one looks cool...and it's the right time of year for the spooky one seems...or maybe the one with all the jobs in it...
The stuff ones are all around the $20 mark...might get a few of those to pretty up my sims and their homes.
I guess it all depends what's actually in stock...

Are you in Australia? If so, have a look at Big W, last week they had all their sims 3 on special, there were expansion packs and stuff packs starting from $15. Didn't look too closely but they were very cheap!Nandireya wrote:Thanks, guys.

Re: A question for PC Simmers...
The Sims 3 Ambitions and Nightlife were the expansion packs that I liked the most, and I have all of them (Sims, Sims 2 & Sims 3 included) except the pets and the spooky one for Sims 3. If you provide a fridge, bed, toilet, and a sink, and set them on 100% autonomy, they will care for themselves, even when you are playing them. If their needs get too low, they will quit whatever you have them doing to take care of themselves. The game pauses when you quit, so they will not starve. EA also fixed the pool ladder issue, so you'll have to find new ways to kill them, if that's your thing.
If you thrive on directed play (goals, "winning") TS3 may be too sandboxy for you. I play The Sims Medieval on the iPad and the Mac when I want less sandbox and more goal-oriented play. Fewer architectural design choices, by far, but it has its own charm.

Re: A question for PC Simmers...
Gods! Does this thing always take this fricken long to load?
This thing is NOT fun! It takes forever to load...my sim wants to sleep all the time...and then it crashes after about 10 minutes of play!
Stuff it! I'm going back to freeplay. It may be full of bugs, but at least it works!

Re: A question for PC Simmers...
I didn't have time to warn you about this. Loading times are indeed horrible. I often make coffee/tea or even prepare dinner while I leave the PC to load. It did get a little better with the last update, but it is still a terrible monster in terms of CPU/Memory/Graphics load on your PC.Nandireya wrote:Gods! EA did promise that the Sims 4 would be easier to run, with less big system requirements. We'll see if they manage.
Re: A question for PC Simmers...
It did do a patchy thing after I posted the above in frustrated anger...and I started a new game which hasn't crashed yet...so it seems to be working a bit better.
But how do you access all the expansion stuff? I installed the island one...the spooky one...the dragon one...but none of it appears on my town map. Do you have to open the game with one of them instead of the Sims 3 shortcut?
